Letter from the Editor: Receiving the Torch

As this hectic year draws to a close, I’m incredibly honoured and excited to follow in the footsteps of the brilliant editors that have come before me to take on the role of Editor-in-Chief for the Woodward Post. I’m also thrilled to announce a new feature of the Woodward Post–Letters to the Editor. From this issue on, I will be including a prompt in each letter from the editor, and encourage readers to reach out to respond to the prompt in roughly 250 words. These responses will be published in the next issue of the Woodward Post. In this issue, we have several letters to the editor that have responded to the prompt “What are you looking forward to doing after quarantine?” Thank you to everyone who wrote in!

This May issue comes at an unfortunate time of global flux. COVID-19 has taken over all aspects of our lives, forcing all of us into extended quarantines, mandatory family bonding, and painful online schooling. In the past month, I’ve cut most of my hair off, bleached it twice, then dyed it again because I was bored. I cannot describe the continual, self-inspired fear I live in as quarantine continues. I have also eaten more Nutella tortillas (Recipe: Nutella jar, 1 tortilla) than I can count, and I’m seriously considering taking up knitting. In other words, isolation isn’t treating me well. 

However, COVID-19 has not only robbed me of at least 6 inches of hair. Sadly, it has also deprived us of the chance to give our graduating class the send-off they deserve. I encourage readers to reach out to graduating seniors to celebrate them as they should be celebrated, and I believe that I speak on behalf of the rest of the school when I say that we are willing to be senior-pranked over Zoom if that is what the Class of 2020 so desires. 

I hope that this issue of the Woodward Post can provide a sense of normalcy amidst these trying times. Right now, it’s especially hard to feel connected to others, and I hope the Woodward Post can help that.
