September Letter From the Editor
Hello, Reader!
Fun fact: fall started this past week. I think we should write the weather a strongly worded letter about this; it doesn’t seem to understand that fall means below 90 degrees. Next month, we’ll be having both cooler weather and (hopefully) the first print issue of the Woodward Post in this decade. Until then, here are a few assorted thoughts I’ve had this September.
Books from September; Three Sentence Reviews:
Talking to Strangers by Malcom Gladwell
Humans rely on over-generalizations to understand the world around us, particularly in times of stress. This mode of thinking applies imperfectly to interpersonal interactions, as people don’t always present in a way that matches their intentions. Why it took Gladwell 300 pages to explain this is beyond me. 4/10, way too long.
Harlem Shadows by Claude McKay
I picked up this book because I wanted to expand my very limited knowledge of poetry. Honestly, there is no review I could give that would do it justice. Go read it. 9/10.
Sophia’s Random Food for Thought:
Does good advice have a gender?
How much does your external presentation influence the way the world interacts with you? Related to that, how much will I never be able to change the way people view me?
Are you more likely to try and change the system or manipulate the system?
Is there a link between stupidity and confidence?
Things I’ve Learned:
Sleep. Sleep is amazing, and the whole world is more manageable when you have it. The difference between six and eight hours is monumental, and coffee is not a sustainable substitute for those two hours.
There’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. Similarly, there’s a difference between humility and self-deprecation. When I actually learn how to identify those differences, I will be unstoppable.
How to fold origami dragons. With the Pomodoro method, I study for 25 minutes and use the subsequent 5 minute break to fold one. So, if for any reason you need a small paper dragon, come find me; I have a steadily growing flock sitting on my kitchen table.
We’re almost through the first nine weeks, just keep hanging in there. And now, go read this month’s fantastic articles from the writing team here at the Woodward Post. Happy September everyone!
May your path be clearly marked, and may you never accidentally wake up early on a Saturday.
Good luck out there,
Sophia
